Sociology
Sociology is a popular and successful option at Key Stage 4.
Sociology is the study of modern human societies. Students learn how our society is organised and what benefits and difficulties this creates for people.
Students learn to analyse evidence from written sources, newspapers, films and documentation to make conclusions about the world they live in.
Students are encouraged to take part in discussion and look at topics from different viewpoints and perspectives.
Many students go on to study ‘A’ Level Sociology.
Key Stage 4
We follow the AQA specification. The structure of the course is:
Year 10 – Unit 1
· Studying Society
· Family
· Education
Students take this exam at the end of Year 10.
Year 11 – Unit 2
· Crime and Deviance
· Power
· Mass Media
· Social Inequality
Students take the Unit 2 exam in Year 11.
The exams are a mixture of short answer questions and essays.
Key Stage 5
We follow the AQA specification. The structure of the course is:
Y12 AS Culture and Identity and Education and Sociological Methods
Y13 A2 Mass Media and Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods
Students are entered for these papers at the end of each academic year.
The way Sociology helps students develop a critique of contemporary society is highly sought after by many universities and employers. Consequently, many KS5 students often choose to read Sociology at university and then go on to secure very successful careers in a wide range of employment opportunities within the private and public sectors.

"Sociology is about social myth-busting; Sociologists actively seek to uncover the uncommon ways of explaining how humans come together to form and sustain that complex thing we call society. Sociology teachers are totally committed to your success and are rightly proud of the excellent examination results students achieve at KS4 and KS5."
Sociology Subject Leader - Simone Shorter
