Science
The 10 fully qualified Science teachers within the department are committed to raising achievement. The Science department has a vision statement which encapsulates their dedication to the science education of our students at Sedgehill.
“Sedgehill students need to be scientifically literate young adults. Our aim in the Science Department is to provide an area in the school where students will enjoy and be successful in studying scientific theory through practical work. Together with the communications skills developed through group work they will be prepared for the demands of the 21st Century.”
KS3 Science
Students are taught Science and Mathematics in their mixed ability tutor groups in year 7 and taught in sets according to their ability from year 8 onwards. The four attainment targets for Science are taught in half term modules which cover the knowledge needed for KS3 assessment together with scientific investigation work. These practical based courses are designed to prepare our students for the compulsory science examinations which all students take in KS4.
KS4 Science
All Year 10 and 11 students study core science. They also have the opportunity to opt for additional or triple science courses at the end of year 9. We follow the OCR 21st century suite of syllabi which allows the students to take module examinations throughout the key stage which are credited to their final examination grade at the end of the key stage. There are opportunities for students to retake these module examinations to improve their overall grades
