Mathematics
The eleven specialist Maths teachers in the department are dedicated to raising the achievement of every student in the school, from those with SEN needs in year 7 to A2 students aiming to go to University. Pupils are taught Maths and Science in their mixed ability tutor groups in year 7 and taught in sets according to their ability from year 8 onwards. Termly assessments provide the opportunity for promotion to higher sets, allowing students to make progress and fulfil their mathematical potential. All staff teach across the age and ability range in Key Stages 3 and 4.
KS3
We have a rich and varied curriculum at KS3, the majority of which is covered in year 8, that covers the 5 attainment targets – Using and Applying Maths, Number and Calculating, Algebra, Shape and Data Handling. In addition to this, pupils also do investigations, projects and ICT work. We offer extra-curricular activities such as Mathematical Art, Chess and Snooker clubs.
KS4
Overview:
This qualification in Mathematics encourages students to develop confidence in, and a positive attitude towards, mathematics and to recognise the importance of mathematics in their own lives and to society. We aim to prepare students to make informed decisions about the use of technology, the management of money, further learning opportunities and career choices.
Course content:
This Edexcel GCSE in Mathematics qualification requires students to:
• Develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts, including:
– Number
– Algebra
– Geometry
– Measures
– Statistics
– Probability
• Use their knowledge and understanding to make connections between mathematical concepts.
• Apply the functional elements of mathematics in everyday and real-life situations.
They are assed in a linear exam at the end of Year 11 with a possible option for early entry.
KS5
The department runs a successful Edexcel A - Level Maths course for students who achieve a grade B or above at GCSE. The AS course consists of 2 Core modules and a Statistics module. Those students who achieve at least a grade D at the end of the AS course go on to study 2 more Core modules and Mechanics in year 13. In the last 3 years all students have achieved or exceeded their baseline grades. This is due to the quality of the teaching and the close, positive relationship that exists between the teachers and the students.
